Taking its name from a house called Elkwater in Darras Hall estate, that once stood where owner Rachael’s childhood home now sits.
The Elkwater house was built by Robert Warwick, a local man who had grown up living in Callerton Hall with his father, mother, five brothers and sister, in the 19th century. As a young man, Robert had bravely travelled to Canada to set up a ranch with one of his younger brothers in a place called Elkwater. Sadly after several years of being in Canada, the younger sibling drowned in a ship sinking on the Lawrence River. This followed the recent deaths of several of his other brothers. Deeply saddened, Robert returned home, and married a lady called Edith, and built the Elkwater marital home for them to live in. Having never fathered any children, Robert passed away in the 1940’s, but Edith continued to live alone in Elkwater until she died in the 1970s. Elkwater was then sold to a local house builder, and was sadly demolished.
A memorial plaque of the Warwick family now hangs in St Mary’s church, Ponteland.
